Sarah Sanders softens gov’t shutdown talk, says there’s more than one way to fund a border wall

President Trump may be signaling to Democrats that he doesn’t need their help to fund his border wall after all.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders seemed to suggest that the administration has “other ways” to get to the $5 billion needed to fund the wall at the U.S.-Mexico border and avoid a threatened government shutdown.

“We have other ways that we can get to that five billion,” Sanders told Fox News’ Bill Hemmer and Sandra Smith on Tuesday, signaling Trump wants to avoid a shutdown.

“We’ll work with Congress if they will make sure that we get a bill passed that provides not just the funding for the wall, but there is a piece of legislation that has been pushed around that Democrats voted 26-5 out of committee that provides roughly $26 billion in border security, including $1.6 billion for the wall,” she said.

“That’s something that we would be able to support as long as we can couple that with other funding resources to get to the $5 billion,” Sanders added.

Though she was not more specific about what those sources could be, Sanders indicated that Republican lawmakers have been looking into whether un-allocated funds that have already been approved can be used toward funding the wall.

“There is certainly a number of different funding sources that we’ve identified that we can use that we can couple with the money that would be given through congressional appropriations to help us get to the $5 billion the president needs in order to protect our border,” Sanders said.

Lawmakers have been worried that the disagreements over funding the wall, which the president demanded in a fiery meeting with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi last week, would lead to a partial government shutdown before both chambers of Congress head home for Christmas.

House and Senate Democrats refused to budge from the $1.6 billion they are willing to approve for the border wall while Trump has demanded that $5 billion is needed.

“At the end of the day we don’t want to shut down the government. We want to shut down the border from illegal immigration, from drugs coming into this country and make sure we know who is coming and why they’re coming,” Sanders told Fox News. “That’s what the president is focused on and he is not going to back down until he gets what he needs to make sure the people of this country are protected.”

Sanders’ remarks, and a scheduled afternoon press briefing, left many wondering if the White House was caving to opposition by Democrats.

Reports of lawmakers’ reactions and other discussions were shared after Sanders’ interview.

Meanwhile, one American is personally taking on the issue, calling for Trump supporters to join an effort to raise the needed funds without the help of the government.

We the people will fund the wall,” declares a GoFundMe page launched by former Senior Airman Brian Kolfage, a triple amputee who sustained life-threatening injuries while deployed in Iraq in 2004.

“As a veteran who has given so much, 3 limbs, I feel deeply invested to this nation to ensure future generations have everything we have today. Too many Americans have been murdered by illegal aliens and too many illegals are taking advantage of the United States taxpayers with no means of ever contributing to our society,” Kolfage wrote on the campaign page. “I have grandparents who immigrated to America legally, they did it the correct way and it’s time we uphold our laws, and get this wall BUILT! It’s up to Americans to help out and pitch in to get this project rolling.”

Kolfage, the most severely wounded Airman to survive his wounds, added:

“If the 63 million people who voted for Trump each pledge $80, we can build the wall.” That equates to roughly 5Billion Dollars, even if we get half, that’s half the wall. We can do this.

Democrats are going to stall this project by every means possible and play political games to ensure President Trump doesn’t get his victor. They’d rather see President Trump fail, than see America succeed. However, if we can fund a large portion of this wall, it will jumpstart things and will be less money Trump has to secure from our politicians.

The veteran detailed the fine print and promised to ensure the allocation of the funds, stating that a legal document would “bind the government to using the funds for the border wall itself, nothing else.” As of this writing, the campaign has raised nearly $74,000.

“This won’t be easy, but it’s our duty as citizens. This needs to be shared every single day by each of you on social media,” he added. “We can do it, and we can help President Trump make America safe again!”
