The Department of Homeland Security schooled CNN correspondent Jim Sciutto on how to put “facts first” when claiming to do a fact-check on the president.
Sciutto offered his analysis of President Donald Trump’s showdown with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi on Tuesday, focusing on a claim about terrorists being caught at the U.S.-Mexico border.
The president’s statement about the arrest of 10 terrorists at the border was questioned by CNN and Sciutto noted Wednesday that, after being referred to the Department of Homeland Security by the White House, he still had no answers.
“DHS did not have any information about 10 recent terror arrests,” he said, saying statistics were provided that did not relate to the southern border.
“DHS did not provide evidence of a single terrorist caught at the southern border over the very last short period of time as the president claimed,” Sciutto added.
The CNN reporter was sure to mention that this wasn’t the first time Trump has “implied” that the terror threat makes the wall necessary.
The president has now twice used the threat of terrorism to justify the wall. Facts supplied by DHS don’t back that up. https://t.co/N3XDabBPRO

But DHS press secretary Tyler Houlton provided a swift reality check for Sciutto.
We are happy to provide the facts — but you never reached out. In fact, DHS prevented 3,755 known or suspected terrorists from traveling to or entering the U.S. in FY 17. That’s in addition to 17,526 criminals, 1,019 gang members, and 3,028 special interest aliens. #FactsFirst https://t.co/4naI8XOg9x

Apparently, all Sciutto had to do was ask.
Ouch.

The average CNN viewer probably took Sciutto’s analysis as fact but Twitter users called out the deliberate misrepresentation and gave the DHS a round of applause for stepping up.
Nice work DHS

Jim don’t take a position without checking your facts.
You just got spanked.— TomO (@TomOSullivan65) December 13, 2018
That will leave a mark. Ouch

@cnn gets owned AGAIN instead of doing their job of making 1 phone call or sending an e-mail to confirm.. Instead of DOING THEIR EASY JOB of calling to confirm they call @realDonaldTrump a liar. @CNN journalists should be janitors because they suck at journalism. pic.twitter.com/DweTdawjqK

Jim doesn’t allow facts to interfere with a good CNN smear job.
