Tucker Carlson squared off with a liberal radio host over a vast “international racist conspiracy” involving the people of Mexico.
During Wednesday’s “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” the Fox News host weighed in on the Central American migrant caravan that has been “agitating” to cross the U.S. border and has “cast a pall over American politics.”
Carlson cited a new poll by a Mexican news organization that revealed more than half of Mexican citizens hold a negative view of the migrant caravan which is attempting to cross into the U.S.
He aired video clips of several residents of Tijuana who are not happy about the “invasion” of their city.
“I’m not really in favor of them coming the way they did,” one woman said.
“In my 20 years working here, it’s as if we’re in a war zone,” a man said, while another told the reporter that the problem is getting worse in Baja because “our government is not taking control of these [massive numbers].”
According to an El Universal poll Carlson cited, 70 percent of Mexican citizens hold a negative view of the caravan with more than half – 52 percent – believe their government should block any migrants from entering their country without proper documentation.
“So the question is — we are getting this right from CNN — are the citizens of Mexico anti-Hispanic racists? They’ve got to be!” Carlson said.
“What I find amazing about this is that the international racist conspiracy is so vast that it includes the majority of Mexican citizens,” he exclaimed.
“I never even imagined that in my wildest dreams. Are you surprised to hear it?” Carlson asked his guest, author and radio talk show host, Ethan Bearman.
“I’m actually not surprised, Tucker, because we as human beings have a history of not liking the other,” Bearman replied. “So any time that we see the other people coming in to our country we have a negative response to it. That is something we have to consciously overcome to connect as fellow human beings because don’t forget these migrants are human beings.”
“It’s a fair kind of nonjudgmental observation of human nature. I agree with it, I think,” Carlson responded. “What I don’t agree with is the reduction by the morons in control of our culture and our public conversation of everything to a simple black versus white, white versus Hispanic racial divide.
“It’s much more complicated. They are not racists for not wanting their country changed by migration overnight, are they?” he asked.
“No, that doesn’t make them racist,” Bearman agreed before going on to lecture about how human beings are no longer cavemen and should not “give in to those deep base feelings” because we are advanced enough now to process people whom he described as “asylum-seekers.”
Carlson interrupted to correct him.
“They are not fleeing a war. If they qualify for asylum, that means that every person in the nation of Honduras by definition qualifies for asylum. which is of course is insane. That is a separate debate,” the Fox News host said.
“You are giving the residents of Tijuana every benefit of every doubt,” he continued, noting how Bearman characterized the “atavistic instincts” of the people of Tijuana.
“I have never heard a liberal say that about the American citizens saying wait, my country is totally different,” as they would be labeled racists, Carlson pointed out. “Why don’t we give our own people the benefit of the doubt the way you’re giving the residents of Tijuana?”
Bearman rolled out the liberal talking points about human beings “fleeing” a war who deserve not to be “demonized.”
The two continued to debate the issue until Carlson finally asked his guest to concede one point.
“Decent people can look at mass migration and say you know what? I’m not into it. I don’t like it. And that doesn’t make them bad people,” he said.
“It doesn’t make them bad,” Bearman agreed. “Again, I just want to say that we can’t live our lives like we still live in caves…and we have to rise above that. It doesn’t make you bad that you have the base instinct but if you give into it and you stop there, you’ve have stunted your own growth. I don’t think that is healthy.”
