‘Oh, please!’ Fox panel heats up over Democrats’ destructive, and risky, identity politics game

Reports that Democrats’ 2020 strategy of identity politics sparked debate over whether this could push more voters into embracing President Donald Trump.

Fox News’ Laura Ingraham took on the issue Monday, discussing it with former political science and law professor  at Vanderbilt University, Dr. Carol Swain, and civil rights attorney Leo Terrell in a fiery debate.

The Democrats’ new plan for 2020, Ingraham noted on “The Angle” is to “abandon and demonize half the country.”

The Fox News host cited a new report by Politico detailing how 2020 Democratic hopefuls are talking “more explicitly about race” and, in the process, are “shrugging off warnings that embracing so-called identity politics could distract from the party’s economic message and push white voters further into Donald Trump’s arms.”

When asked if this was the direction he wanted to see his party headed in, Terrell fired back that Trump “plays identity politics,” and has “sent out coded messages.”

“The Democrats welcome his identity politics and they’re intersecting race identity and social issues,” Terrell said, claiming Democrats are just “seizing” on what the president has started.

“They’re challenging whites to join up because Trump has alienated every base in this country,” he continued to rant, making it a point to tell Ingraham that Orange County in California is now “all blue.”

The Fox News host quipped that she was fully aware of the fact but added that “politics is not a zero-sum game.”

Swain chimed in to note that as “an enthusiastic supporter” of the president, she sees how the political left has been playing the identity politics game “for the last two decades on university campuses and they’ve taken it now to the electorate.”

The former professor believes it is “polarizing” and is a form of “tribalism” as it does not serve the “interests of Americans.”

“So it’s not Donald Trump, it’s the political left and they’re destroying America in the process,” Swain said.

Terrell rebutted the claim that white conservatives on college campuses have been afraid to speak out, arguing that “white college students voted Democrat” in the midterm elections. Swain interjected that this is due to intimidation.

“Because they’ve been shamed and intimidated,” she said, prompting an exasperated “Oh, come on!” from Terrell.

“She’s saying white college people are being brainwashed,” he exclaimed.

Ingraham asked the civil rights attorney about recent comments by Hillary Clinton and liberal CNN contributor Kirsten Powers who implied that pro-Trump women are racists for voting for him.

“Who’s playing identity politics more than the left saying that a black person can’t support Trump, you’re self-loathing. Or a white woman can’t support Trump, you’re a racist?” Ingraham asked. “You’re saying Donald Trump’s the problem? You’ve gotta be kidding me!”

But there was no moving Terrell on the issue as he declared that when Trump actually does something about criminal justice reform, he will “vote Republican.”

“He’s already done more for blacks than President Obama and previous Democrats, and blacks are waking up,” Swain jumped in.

“Oh, please!” Terrell spit back, condescendingly.

“Civil rights advocates like you are just helping to destroy America,” Swain fired back.
