Congresswoman-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the Democratic socialist elected to represent New York’s 14th congressional district, made a big deal about her being a working class hero who couldn’t afford to pay for an apartment in Washington, D.C., but Fox News is throwing some serious shade on that claim.
And considering how the Democrat started her first day of new-member orientation, some may have though she planned to squat in Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s office until her government check starts flowing — she participated in a sit-in with climate change zealots.
Movements should care about elections, because we can elect people who will fight with our movements.
Right now, @Ocasio2018 is sitting in @NancyPelosi’s office with a huge crowd of young folks demanding a #GreenNewDeal & the just climate solutions we need.

“I have three months without a salary before I’m a member of Congress. So, how do I get an apartment? Those little things are very real,” Ocasio-Cortez told The New York Times last week after being elected to office.
A bartender by trade, the new lawmaker’s $174,000-a-year salary doesn’t kick in until January and, according to real estate website Zillow, the median rent in Washington is $2,700 a month.
Fox News did a deep dive on Ocasio-Cortez’s finances based on her own financial disclosure reports and the numbers seem to disqualify her from being a member of the “Rent is Too Damn High” club.
Numbers that show the proletariat should have at least $15,000 in savings.
More from Fox News:
She reported having between $15,001 and $50,000 in her checking account as of the end of April 2018, according to a Financial Disclosure Report she submitted to the clerk of the U.S. House of Representatives.
The financial disclosure also reveals that she has an investment account valued between $1,001 and $15,000.
This puts the socialist Democrat well above most American households, whose median checking account balance is $3,400, according to the latest Federal Reserve survey in 2016. Among Millennials, the median balance is about $1,400.
This also means that for her not to afford an apartment in Washington, she should have depleted all her savings – as potentially ranging up to $50,000 – in just three months when she wasn’t receiving any income.
Ocasio-Cortez did stop working in February to campaign full time and began living off her savings and her partner’s income, but the candidate did start paying herself from her campaign haul in August — which is legal.
According to Fox News, she paid herself $6,200 in salary since August, with her most recent paycheck being from mid-October for $1,288.96.
Interestingly, when comrades on the left wanted to start a GoFundMe campaign after The Times interview to cover Ocasio-Cortez costs, she redirected their generosity.
Again, I cannot thank everyone enough for the offers of help.

As for the Fox News financial analysts, we can expect push back from Ocasio-Cortez, as she lashed out at the network after Ed Henry drew attention to a photo shoot that she took part in while rocking a rather expensive outfit.
