‘Make France Great Again!’ Trump delivers Macron a history lesson and brutal beatdown in morning Twitter tirade

While President Donald Trump took the high road while a guest in French President Emmanuel Macron’s backyard, even as Macron slighted him for declaring that he is a “nationalist” in that he loves his country, the president made up for lost ground on Tuesday.

In a series of tweets, Trump mocked Macron, beginning with the French president’s call for the creation of a “true European army” independent of NATO that will allow the EU to protect itself from threats — to include the U.S.

Trump reminded Macron of how well that has worked out in the past — as Parisians were learning to speak German!

“Emmanuel Macron suggests building its own army to protect Europe against the U.S., China and Russia. But it was Germany in World Wars One & Two – How did that work out for France? They were starting to learn German in Paris before the U.S. came along. Pay for NATO or not!” the president tweeted.

Speaking at a ceremony near the Arc de Triomphe marking the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, Macron conflated nationalist with nationalism in its extreme, as was seen in Nazi Germany, calling it “a betrayal of patriotism.”

“Patriotism is the exact opposite of nationalism,” Macron said. “Nationalism is a betrayal of patriotism. By saying our interests first, who cares about the others, we erase what a nation holds dearest, what gives it life, what makes it great and what is essential: its moral values.”

“I know there are old demons which are coming back to the surface,” he added. “They are ready to wreak chaos and death. History sometimes threatens to take its sinister course once again.”

President Trump also intimated there could be action taken to better ensure an equal playing field on trade between the two countries.

“On Trade, France makes excellent wine, but so does the U.S. The problem is that France makes it very hard for the U.S. to sell its wines into France, and charges big Tariffs, whereas the U.S. makes it easy for French wines, and charges very small Tariffs. Not fair, must change!” he tweeted.

As for Macron rebuking Trump’s “America First” policies, Trump said the French president was trying to distract from a “very low approval rating.”

He also noted the legendary French arrogance, albeit in a positive manner.

“The problem is that Emmanuel suffers from a very low Approval Rating in France, 26%, and an unemployment rate of almost 10%. He was just trying to get onto another subject. By the way, there is no country more Nationalist than France, very proud people-and rightfully so!……..” Trump tweeted.

He then offered a mic-drop finish to his early morning rant.

“……MAKE FRANCE GREAT AGAIN!” tweeted Trump.

And with the anti-Trump media continuing to make political hay over the fact that Trump missed part of the ceremony marking the 100th Anniversary of the end of World War One, he added a little clarity among all the “fake news.”

“By the way, when the helicopter couldn’t fly to the first cemetery in France because of almost zero visibility, I suggested driving,” he explained. “Secret Service said NO, too far from airport & big Paris shutdown. Speech next day at American Cemetary in pouring rain! Little reported-Fake News!”

That Trump misspelled “cemetery” is sure to overshadow his effort to set the record straight amid the prescribed media narrative ridiculing him for wanting to avoid the rain.
