CNN’s Van Jones has had an epiphany on the Democrat Party’s main crusade.
The left-leaning commentator and former Obama Green czar criticized the Democrats’ obsession with impeaching the president as “a problem” within the party.
“Have you seen a car crash? That could be what you get,” Jones said on CNN Thursday, responding to a panel discussion on how to reconcile old-school politicians with progressives in the party advocating impeachment.
“First of all, it’s amazing that it’s news for a former vice president to say, ‘Don’t impeach the president yet until you get a report,’” Jones said, referring to former Vice-President Joe Biden’s recent caution about impeaching Trump without “basis.”
“And that’s considered conservative. That’s considered moderate,” Jones said. “It’s like, OK, we might have a problem in this party.”
“I think if Democrats want to present themselves as a party that should have the presidency, they might want to actually focus on everyday issues,” he said.
“I think there’s a section of people in our party that are spun up about Trump — rightfully so, understandably so — and feel like impeachment is some badge, some proof that you’re really mad about what’s going on in the country,” he added.
“I think the people who are going to do better are the people who say, ‘I’m mad about what’s going on in the country, so I want to help you, not spend all my time trying to figure out a way to hurt the president,’” Jones explained.
Criticizing Trump will be more challenging, Jones noted, if people like Biden are getting “beat up” for wanting to “wait for the facts.”
“We need to be more consistent,” Jones said.
And while Jones may see the calls for impeaching Trump as counterproductive for the party, Democrats have been banging that drum for months, using the threat of impeachment for every supposed scandal that besets the commander-in-chief.
Democratic Senate candidate Beto O’Rourke, who is running against incumbent Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz, reiterated his commitment to vote to impeach Trump, saying “there is enough there” during his CNN townhall on Thursday.

“I would liken impeachment to an indictment. There is enough there to proceed with the trial for a full vetting of the facts and to make the best-informed decision in the interests of this country and our future,” he said.
O’Rourke’s view veers from that held by other Democrats like Biden and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi who dismissed the idea on Tuesday.
“I think an impeachment, to use that word, is very divisive,” she said. “That isn’t a path that I would like to go down.”
But impeachment has been the rallying cry by Democrats like Rep. Maxine Waters who never misses an opportunity to threaten Trump.
House Democrats have launched an effort to introduce articles of impeachment against Trump several tines. Texas Democrat Rep. Al Green has brought articles to impeach Trump to the House floor multiple times but to no avail so far.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has appeared to be leaning toward impeachment as well, though he has generally refrained from the blatant calls made by his colleagues.
Meanwhile, liberal billionaire Tom Steyer launched “Need to Impeach” last year which has reportedly signed up 6 million supporters, according to Fox News.
“Tom Steyer is using his fortune to make sure Democratic leaders are forced by the progressive base of the party to try and impeach the president,” David Avella, chairman of the Republican organization GOPAC, told Fox News. “And it’s a message Democrats are embracing.”
