Comedian Dave Chappelle isn’t joining all the haters who are mad at his “brother” Kanye West following hisĀ controversial meeting with President Donald Trump.
Chappelle was asked about his friend by CNN’s Van Jones in an interview taped before West’s visit to the White House on Thursday.
The comedian jokingly stood up and pretended to walk out of the studio when Jones brought up theĀ controversial hip-hop star in the interview set to air on Saturday. But Chappelle came to West’s defense, even as the left was about to have a meltdown over the White House visit.
āFirst of all, you know, Kanyeās an artist, man. Heās a genius.ā Chappelle said. āI think the angle heās seeing things from is about the division that he sees. And heās not inconsistent with what heās saying.”
But the 45-year-old actor and stand-up comic clarified that he doesn’t always agree with West.
“Iām not mad at Kanye. Thatās my brother ā I love him, I support him,ā Chappelle explained. āBut, you know, I donāt have to agree with everything that he says. I just trust him as a person of intent.Ā But yeah, he shouldn’t say all that sh**.”
West ignited a firestorm on the left with his Oval Office visit as he spoke to a roomful of visitors sitting across the desk from the president. His open support of Trump, wearingĀ a red “Make America Great Again” hat and even hugging the president, sent liberals spiraling.
CNN has come under fire for allowing the over-the-top reactions from those on the network, especially host Don Lemon who slammed West’s “minstrel show” at the White House as he added,Ā āKanyeās mother is rolling over in her grave.ā
Chappelle reflected on theĀ implications of the Trump presidency in his interview with Jones.
“The thing that’s scary about this presidency is after it,” he said. “I don’t know if you’ve been married before or had a girlfriend and said something in a fight that was so wrong.”
“And then after that … we’re still family, we’re still around each other,” Chappelle added. “But man, I sure did say all that sh**, didn’t I?”
Shortly after the 2016 election, Chappelle declared thatĀ Americans should āgive Trump a chance,ā a statement he has since regretted making. Jones asked the comedian to elaborate on his thoughts.
āYou said you wanted to give Trump a chance but you also wanted to make sure that he gave disenfranchised people a chance. Looking at the Trump presidency almost two years in, do you feel that he gave disenfranchised people a chance?ā Jones asked.
āItās hard to tell where Trump ends and his constituents begin, but I think that the rhetoric of his presidency is repugnant. I just donāt like the way he talks,” Chappelle replied.
“Weāre living in a time where thereās got to be a little more cultural sensitivity. And even a guy like me that’s just writing jokes, I have to listen more than Iāve ever had to listen because the gripes come so fast and furious. And Iām not dismissive of peopleās gripes – might sound like I am on stage but I listen,” he continued.
“I donāt like talking bad about the president, but I say we should give him the chance because heās the president of the United States now, he added. “What choice do I have?ā
