Hillary Clinton took her sour grapes road show to network TV, making an awkward cameo appearance on the rebooted “Murphy Brown.”
The failed Democratic presidential candidate and former secretary of state poked fun at herself in the premiere of the returning sitcom, starring Candice Bergen, which aired Thursday on CBS.
Bergen’s character, Murphy Brown, interviewed Clinton’s character, “Hilary” – a woman who spells her name with one “L” – for a secretarial position with her cable news show “Murphy in the Morning.”
“Hello, I’m hear to interview for the secretarial position,” Clinton said, arriving on the set in her trademark pantsuit.
“God,” a stunned Brown replied. “You look just like-”
“I know, Hillary Clinton. I get that a lot,” Clinton responded. “But my name is spelled with one ‘L.’”
Though she is warned that it is a “demanding job,” Clinton’s character said she’s not afraid of hard work and that she’s “qualified and ready on day one.”
“And I also assume you’ve had previous experience secretarial experience?” Brown asked.
“Absolutely,” Clinton said. “For four years, I was the secretary… of a very large organization.”
“And you have all the requisite skills? Computer? Email?” Brown asked.
“Emails… I do have some experience with emails,” Clinton replied with the expected punchline.
Brown admitted the applicant was “impressive” and “maybe overqualified,” promising to be in touch. Clinton then handed over her business card.
“Hillary@YouCouldHaveHadMe.com,” Brown read out loud as the not-very-funny segment ended.
Clinton’s appearance on the “Murphy Brown” reboot continues the tradition of cameos that were featured in the original series which ran for 10 seasons from 1988 to 1998. Famous faces from Aretha Franklin and news reporter Connie Chung to former Vice President Dan Quayle all made cameo appearances over the years.
“We’ve always tried to blur the lines between fiction and reality, and we were so successful in doing that in the first iteration of this show that the vice president thought Murphy was a real person,” the show’s creator English said during the Television Critics Association press tour panel, according to Variety. “And so we plan to do the same thing again.”
English wanted to kick off the reboot with an appearance by someone whose political views closely reflected that of the sitcom’s main character, Variety noted. It remains to be seen if that will still play out well for viewers on the other side of the political aisle.
The cameo on “Murphy Brown” is only one of Clinton’s scheduled appearances on the fall television lineup. She will be on the fifth season premiere of “Madam Secretary” on CBS on Oct. 7, joining former Secretaries of State Colin Powell and Madeleine Albright.

Her joke in the show is “I was the secretary of a large organization and I have experience with emails.” She’s got quite the set of balls. How is that funny? 4 Americans died that day because of that and her and she turns it into a cheap punchline for a laugh track on a sitcom?

Hate to tell you CBS. I saw from the beginning this reboot is about attacking Trump and Republicans. I have no interest in seeing that trash so I will not. Will be surprised if it lasts the full season. BTW Colbert show is awful.
