A mother who took her 15-year-old daughter’s cell phone away as disciple found herself in handcuffs, as she was arrested for theft.
Jodie May, from Hudonville, Michigan, was taken into custody and put in a holding cell for two hours until she posted a $200 bond and was released, according to ABC 13 Michigan.
Fortunately, May would be vindicated, as the Ottawa County prosecutor dismissed the charges this week after it was determined that her daughter owned the phone and not her ex-husband.
May took her teen daughter’s iPhone 6 away in April after she got in trouble at school and her ex-husband, who told police he owned the phone, reported it stolen.
“I’ve had an opportunity to discuss this case with the victim in this case, or at least the person we believed owned the property,” Ottawa County Assistant Prosecutor Sarah Matwiejczyk told the judge.
“The mother defendant being the mother of the minor child, I believe that changes the case significantly,” Matwiejczyk said. “Therefore we are requesting the charges be dismissed.”
But the mother wants to know why she was arrested in the first place.
“I would like answers on why it got so far and how it got this far where this happened within my home. I’m disciplining my child, then I’m being the one handcuffed,” May told WOOD-TV.
She was nursing her 4-week-old baby when a deputy showed up at her door — the day before Mother’s Day.
“He had told me that he was going to arrest me, and I asked him if I could turn myself in on that Monday by myself, that I had a new baby,” May said. “She wasn’t taking the bottle yet.”
The deputy refused the request and took her into custody anyway.
