Polish President Andrzej Duda, speaking Tuesday at a joint news conference with President Donald Trump, invited the US to deploy more US troops to Poland, along with establishing a permanent military base in the country.
To warm the American president to the idea, Duda said Poland would call the base “Fort Trump.”
The suggestion drew a smirk from President Trump, who also raised an eyebrow as if he was mulling the idea.
“I would very much like for us to set up a permanent base in Poland, which we would call Fort Trump,” the Polish president said. “I firmly believe that this is possible. I am convinced that such a decision lies in the Polish interest and in the interest of the United States.”
Duda has previously said a US base in his country would “scare away every potential attacker.”
Trump, who said he’s considering the request, noted that Duda offered more than $2 billion to set up a base in Poland.
“He would pay the United States, meaning Poland would be paying billions of dollars for a base,” he explained. “We’re looking at that more and more from the standpoint of defending really wealthy countries.”
A 1997 agreement between NATO and Russia technically forbids U.S. or NATO troops from being permanently based in former Warsaw Pact countries, Fox News reported.
The Trump administration has previously said that it may disregard the agreement.
