Democratic Sen. Mazie Hirono of Hawaii called on the men in America to “just shut up and step up” when it comes to women’s allegations of sexual assault, during a press conference Tuesday with Senate Democrats.
Hirono, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, responded to a reporter who questioned the impact of the women on the committee when it comes to questioning Judge Brett Kavanaugh regarding the assault accusations against him.
“Of course it helps that there are women on that committee, but you know what? I expect the men in this country and the men in this committee … to demand an FBI investigation,” Hirono said. “But really, guess who’s perpetuating all of these kinds of actions? It’s the men in this country! And I just want to say to the men in this country — just shut up and step up! Do the right thing for a change.”

Hirono also urged the media to hold Senate Republicans accountable by promoting a narrative of “unfairness” if they continue with their plans to “fast track” Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court nomination.
“If the Republicans go forward with their plan to railroad this and fast track this as they have so many other nominations, I expect the members of the press to talk about how unfair this all is,” Hirono said. “I don’t think that’s editorializing, that’s laying out some facts.”
Kavanaugh will appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee Monday to discuss the accusation.
