Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., unwittingly asked Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh during confirmation hearings about his “formative years” of high school, totally unaware his line of questioning would take on much more relevance in the days to come.
The senator asked Kavanaugh if he “ever got in trouble,” and whether he was more of a John Boy Walton or Ferris Bueller-type — Kavanaugh responded with a hearty laugh.
“I loved sports, first and foremost” Kavanaugh would then say.
At the end of his time, Kennedy said he was considering asking Kavanaugh if he or his friends ever “snuck a couple of beers past Jesus” during high school, before saying he wasn’t going to go there.
A tight-lipped Kavanaugh again laughed at the good-natured question.
What makes this line of questioning noteworthy is that Sen. Diane Feinstein, D-Calif, had in her possession at the time a letter from Christine Blasey Ford, the woman who accused Kavanaugh of groping her while highly inebriated.
But Feinstein sat there like a toad on a stump, waiting until that last possible moment to spring the letter in an attempt to delay Kavanaugh’s confirmation.
The tactic of rolling out a claim from 36 years ago prompted Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., to say Democrats are “trying to destroy” Kavanaugh’s life.
Either way, the judge is not laughing now.

“This is a completely false allegation,” Kavanaugh said in a statement Monday. “I have never done anything like what the accuser describes—to her or to anyone.”
“I am willing to talk to the Senate Judiciary Committee in any way the Committee deems appropriate to refute this false allegation, from 36 years ago, and defend my integrity.”
