Pampers quietly pulls ‘Sesame Street’ pals off diapers over gender concerns

In today’s mad, mad Post-Obama world, even diapers aren’t safe from progressive ideology.

While there has been no official announcement, Pampers has been quietly pulling “Sesame Street” characters from its diapers, which has prompted speculation that the motivating factor may be gender-related, according to the New York Post.

The characters getting scrubbed by the world’s biggest diaper brand include Elmo, Big Bird, Cookie Monster, and Oscar the Grouch.

Officials at Sesame Street and Procter & Gamble, the company that makes Pampers, fessed up to The Post about the Muppet characters being removed, but there wasn’t much clarity in the reason why.

Susie Wong-Benjamin, a mother of two, told the paper she recently bought Pampers with a generic-looking design and spoke with a Proctor & Gamble customer service rep.

“The Pampers rep said … parents who have daughters thought that the Sesame Street characters are too masculine,” Wong-Benjamin said.

P&G spokeswoman Laura Dressman, in an email to The Post, dismissed the idea that it was gender-related.

“We talk to thousands of parents every year to understand how our diapers are best meeting their babies’ needs and any new trends they might be interested in,” wrote Dressman. “We learned there was a growing desire from Moms and Dads for modern, fresh graphics.”

But it seems that Sesame Street failed to uphold the narrative.

The Post asked Sesame Street spokeswoman Beatrice Chow why Pampers was pulling Sesame Street characters, with no mention of gender, and she responded by e-mailing a link that featured “details about [Pampers’] current support for our gender equality work.”

The link was to a year-old press release about P&G and Sesame Street partnering “to promote gender equality,” and highlighted “a vibrant, 5-year-old Muppet” character Chamki, a female featured in the Indian version of Sesame Street.

The moral of the story apparently being that if you receive Pampers sans Elmo and Co., it’s not a knock-off product, it’s more political correctness gone wild.
