While democratic socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez attempted to defend her $40 trillion agenda, she sidestepped every question on how she would actually finance it.
CNN’s Jake Tapper had to move on in his interview of the New York Democratic Party congressional nominee after she repeatedly dodged his questions about funding her socialist platform.
Proposing controversial policies such as tuition-free public college, free housing and universal healthcare, Ocasio-Cortez’s platform is estimated to cost more than $40 trillion over the next decade, according to the Tax Policy Center, Tapper pointed out on CNN’s “State of the Union” Sunday.
“You recently said in an interview that increasing taxes on the very wealthy, plus an increased corporate tax rate would make $2 trillion over the next ten years,” Tapper said. “So where is the other $38 trillion going to come from?”
“One of the things we need to realize when we look at something like Medicare for all––Medicare for all would save the American people a very large amount of money,” Ocasio-Cortez replied. “And what we see as well is that these systems are not just pie-in-the-sky. They are, many of them are accomplished by every modern civilized democracy in the western world.”
She went on about single payer health care and concluded her non-answer by noting the “really profound decisions about who we want to be as a nation and how we want to act as the wealthiest nation in the history of the world.”
“Right. I get that. But the price tag for everything that you laid out in your campaign is $40 trillion over the next 10 years,” Tapper pressed. “You say it’s not pie in the sky but it’s $40 trillion is quite a bit of money. And the taxes that you talked about raising to pay for this, to pay for your agenda, only count for two. We’re going by left-leaning analysts.”
Her long-winded response covered how people she spoke to in a New York restaurant did not have insurance and how millennials like herself do not buy cars and delay purchasing homes.
“We do know and acknowledge that there are political realities. They don’t always happen with just a wave of a wand but we can work to make these things happen,” she said, again dodging Tapper’s question. “It is a externality, if you will, of unprecedented amounts of student loan debt.”
The CNN host then declared the obvious.
“So I’m assuming I’m not going to get an answer for the other thirty-eight trillion dollars,” Tapper shot back. “But we’ll have you back and maybe we can go over that.”
The New York Congressional candidate was called out recently by Turning Point’s Charlie Kirk who slammed her hypocrisy in pretending to be a “champion of the people” while wearing an outfit that cost nearly $4,000.

Ocasio-Cortez fired back at the criticism, which only sparked more mockery and condemnation.
