For American taxpayers, John McCain’s six-term senate career is the “gift” that keeps on taking. A $174,000 “death gratuity” will be paid to Senator McCain’s family, in keeping with a longstanding tradition of giving a year’s salary to a departed lawmaker’s next of kin.
The $174,000 gratuity will be tacked onto the next federal appropriations bill for taxpayers to bankroll, Roll Call reported. While the practice is nothing new, it raised eyebrows because John McCain’s widow, Cindy McCain, is a wealthy heiress whose net worth reportedly tops $100 million.

Cindy inherited the chairmanship and majority control of Hensley & Co., one of the largest Anheuser-Busch beer distributors in the United States, upon her dad’s death in 2000.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump donated his $400,000 presidential salary to various federal agencies. And Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner both forgo their six-figure White House salaries.
The “death gratuity” was presumably a way to financially help the survivors of a senator at a time when politicians did not use their government jobs as a platform to rake in millions of dollars as book authors, consultants, and public speakers.
Appropriators are now seeking to pass a provision requiring Senate candidates to file their campaign disclosures electronically with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) as part of a move to bolster transparency.
Candidates for the House of Representatives have been required to e-file since 2001, so the Senate is way behind the times.

While delivering the eulogy of her father, an angry Meghan took a dig at President Trump’s famous MAGA slogan by spouting: “The America of John McCain has no need to be made great again because America was always great.”

“I know my father. I know that when people tell him, ‘it can’t be done,’ that guarantees that he gets it done. I know that when someone tells him that something is impossible, that’s what triggers him into action. I’ve seen it time and time again, that look in his eyes when someone says, ‘It can’t be done.’
“I saw that look a little over a year ago when he was told he couldn’t possibly succeed in politics. For my father, ‘impossible’ is just the starting point.”
