Chuck Todd, others ‘stunned’ at Don Jr. going on tv and standing up to Mueller: ‘They have a game plan here’

Liberals can’t get their heads around Donald Trump Jr.’s appearance on a morning television show, attacking the president’s son for critically speaking about special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation.

“What’s Donald Trump Jr. doing on television?” MSNBC’s Chuck Todd asked a panel on “Meet the Press Daily” Tuesday, referring to President Donald Trump’s son appearing on “Good Morning America.”

Todd assumed Trump Jr. answered some “shouted questions” when a reporter caught up with him but said he was surprised to find he actually did an interview, especially in light of an ongoing FBI investigation.

“You’re like, really? You’re in the midst of an investigation by Mueller, really?” Todd said.

“In some ways maybe the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree and he can’t help himself,” NBC News national political reporter Carol Lee responded. “He’s also seen increasingly as a political figure. He’s out there much more, and so he possibly thought this might be a good thing for him to do at this particular moment.”

Trump Jr. asserted he’s not afraid of going to jail as a result of Mueller’s probe though he has denied any wrongdoing as he faces scrutiny over a 2016 meeting with a Kremlin-connected attorney at Trump Tower.

“I’m not because I know what I did, and I’m not worried about any of that,” he said. “That doesn’t mean they won’t try to create something, I mean, we’ve seen that happen with everything. But, again, I’m not.”

Todd suggested that “nobody communicates in this Trump family” since they should have told the president’s eldest son it was not politically expedient for him to do the television interview.

“I just am stunned,” Todd said.

Political strategist Josh Holmes, however, sees more of a calculated plan in how the Trump administration has handled the attacks and what the president has repeatedly called a “witch hunt.”

“They have a game plan here,” the former Chief of Staff and campaign manager to Sen. Mitch McConnell told CNN’s Jake Tapper Tuesday. “I mean, you would have to be blind, deaf and dumb not to acknowledge it.”

Slamming the special counsel’s investigation during his “Good Morning America” interview, Trump Jr. suggested there will “never be a conclusive end” to the probe and said Democrats would use it “as a permanent asterisk on my father’s record” in order to win elections.

Holmes suggested that Trump Jr. is focusing his remarks on the president’s base across the country and that the administration has a strategy.

“The President does — basically, the entire administration, you see Don Jr. doing it, too,” Holmes said. “The one thing we also have to acknowledge is that, you know, the audience for something like this is not you and me and the Washington crowd. The audience is the base across the country that thinks that the President is getting a raw deal on the Mueller investigation.”

Holmes believes the political goal is obvious.

“They want Don Jr. to go out and speak to that and provide new fodder, new ammunition, to get people out and vote,” he told Tapper.  “And I think that’s what the purpose of all of this is.”
