Nike might not suffer, but NFL just got punched in the gut after season opener

Ratings for the NFL’s season opener on September 6 plunged to their lowest levels in 10 years. The ratings tumbled 8% from last year’s season opener, and 9% from 2016, according to the NY Post.

The crash comes amid growing public disgust at the ongoing NFL protests against the American flag and the national anthem. Even though Colin Kaepernick is not playing this season, his unpatriotic gestures have cast a long, dark shadow across America’s former favorite sport.

The NFL has been unable to stem the mass hemorrhaging of TV viewers since 2017, when a number of teams joined Kaepernick in refusing to stand for the national anthem.

As BizPac Review has reported, NFL ratings tanked last year amid escalating uproar. Millions of football fans turned off their TV sets and canceled their game tickets to protest the NFL’s disrespect of the national anthem.

And NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell came under heavy fire for letting the disruptive spectacles continue.

Adding to this year’s backlash against the NFL was Nike’s decision to make Colin Kaepernick the face of its “Just Do It” ad campaign, whose slogan is: “Believe in something, even if it means sacrificing everything.”

That move prompted volcanic backlash from military veterans, who said elevating Kaepernick as an icon of “sacrifice” marginalizes the true sacrifices made by military veterans who died while heroically fighting for the United States.

As a result, Nike’s favorability ratings tanked across-the-board, but initial sales have remained curiously strong, as BizPac Review reported.

Observers say this is because Nike made a calculated business decision to pander to its customer base, who are black Americans, the majority of whom are Democrats.

Fox Sports host Jason Whitlock said Colin Kaepernick is a stooge who’s being used by Nike to gain “social-justice” street cred to deflect attention away from the child labor it exploits to manufacture its expensive sneakers and apparel.

“Nike is using Kaepernick to cover up for issues within the corporation,” Whitlock told Fox Business. “Nike has been sued for discrimination from women, from African-Americans. And Nike has long been criticized for its labor policies in Asia, where they make the shoes with slave labor.”

Whitlock added: “I see Colin Kaepernick and a lot of these other athletes being used by Nike to cover up their problems…They’re not living up to these ideas they [claim] to be supporting.”

Enjoy this NFL season, Kaepernick!
