A message sent out from the text messaging platform belonging to the campaign of Beto O’Rourke, the Democrat running against Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, was in search of “volunteers to help transport undocumented immigrants” to the polls.
“Our records indicate that you’re a supporter,” the text purportedly from a volunteer named Patsy reads. “We are in search of volunteers to help transport undocumented immigrants to polling booths so that they will be able to vote. Would you be able to support this grass-roots effort?”
The campaign confirmed that the text was sent through its text messaging platform, but said the message was not authorized, according to the New York Times.
Another text message was sent asking recipients for their views on “the dangers of socialism.”
Even Cruz received them.
“I’ve gotten three of them myself. My dad has gotten five,” he said, according to the newspaper.
“By the third one I was thinking, ‘Maybe I should vote for him,’” Cruz joked.
O’Rourke campaign spokesman Chris Evans blamed the messages on an “impostor.”
The campaign claimed a first-time volunteer using a fake name was helping out on the “texting team” and sent the messages.
An investigation is said to be underway to identify who this person is.
That O’Rourke, who’s in a close race with Sen. Cruz, would give an unknown person this kind of access to supporters doesn’t say a lot for his organizational skills or the vetting process for volunteers.
While Democrats want to pin the incident on Cruz, the senator’s campaign denied any involvement, saying it wasn’t aware of the text messages, The Times reported.
