Alt-right conspiracy theorist Alex Jones confronted Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., in the halls of the Senate on Wednesday as Rubio was being interviewed by reporters.
Jumping in at will and talking over Rubio off as he tried to answer questions, Jones was spoiling for a fight and almost got one.
Rubio repeatedly told Jones that he doesn’t know who he is. Jones then invaded Rubio’s personal space, patting him on the back in a patronizing manner.
This prompted a stern response from the Republican lawmaker.
“Don’t touch me again, man,” Rubio said, as he looked Jones in the eye. “I’m asking you not to touch me again.”
When Jones protested, Rubio again stated, “I don’t want to be touched.”
When Jones asked if he was going to have him arrested, Rubio replied, “You’re not going to get arrested — I’ll take care of you myself.”
“Oh he’ll beat me up!” Jones replied, interpreting that as a threat as he played to the rest of the press. “You are literally like a little gangster thug. Rubio just threatened to physically fight me.”
Jones talked about not silencing America as Rubio tried to re-engage with the press, and he continued to interrupt.
“You guys can talk to this clown,” he finally told reporters, nodding toward Jones as he walked away.
The confrontation and rudeness aside, Rubio repeatedly passed on the opportunity to go on the record about bias against conservatives on social media — which was the critical point Jones was making.
When another reporter broached the subject, Rubio deferred to talk about a “bigger bias against freedom of expression.”
The bias exists and it’s dire, regardless of how much Facebook and Twitter ( and apparently Rubio) deny it, and there are few serious champions on the right fighting this fight, leaving the battle in the hands of wingnuts like Alex Jones… which hurts more than it helps.
