In an unlikely twist, Sen. Dianne Feinstein gave Supreme Court Justice nominee Brett Kavanaugh a bit of help during his second day of confirmation hearings.
After hours of intense questioning, a moment of levity erupted before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday.
“If you are confirmed, and I believe you will be, what is your hope when all of this is said and done, and your time is up? How would you like to be remembered?” Sen. Lindsey Graham asked the judge.
“A good dad … a good judge …,” Kavanaugh slowly replied, considering his response.
Feinstein, one of Kavanaugh’s staunchest critics, “A good husband.”
Amid a few chuckles in the room, Kavanaugh smiled and agreed, repeating the California Democrat’s words.
“I think he is getting there,” Graham quipped. “Thanks, Dianne. You helped him a lot. It will be better for you tonight.”
Laughter erupted as the nominee thanked Feinstein, the ranking member on the Senate Judiciary Committee who had just grilled him over Second Amendment rulings.
“I owe you,” he told her, laughing before he continued to answer the question.
“A good son, I’ll quickly add. Good friend,” Kavanaugh concluded. “I think about the pillars of my life, which are being a judge, of course, and being a teacher. Either way this ends up, I will continue teaching. Coaching, as I mentioned, is a huge part of my life, and I will try to continue that. Senator Kennedy advised me when we met. Make sure you keep coaching. Volunteering, being a dad and a son — a husband and a friend.”
