Papadopoulos’ sensational accusations against Trump and Sessions look like desperate bid to avoid prison

In what appeared to be a desperate attempt to avoid being hauled away from his uber-attractive wife and tossed into prison, President Donald Trump’s former campaign aide George Papadopoulos trotted out sensational accusations Friday against both the president and Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

The accusations centered on failed attempts by Papadopoulos during the presidential election two years ago to arrange a meeting between Trump and a Russian operative described as a relative of Russian President Vladimir Putin who reportedly had dirty on then-Democrat nominee Hillary Clinton.

According to a court filing submitted Friday by Papadopoulos’ attorneys, when he broached a potential meeting with Trump’s campaign, both the then-GOP nominee and Sessions indicated support for it.

“While some in the room rebuffed George’s offer, Mr. Trump nodded with approval and deferred to Mr. Sessions who appeared to like the idea and stated that the campaign should look into it,” the filing read. “George’s giddiness over Mr. Trump’s recognition was prominent during the days that followed.”

Some argue this sounds far-fetched, especially in light of Sessions’ unflinching commitment to playing by the rules. The attorney general has been accused of being a veritable goody-two-shoes, which is reportedly why he recused himself from the Russian collusion investigation last year and continues to steer clear of it, despite requests from the president to get involved.

Skeptics also point to Session’s own testimony. While speaking with Congress under oath in June of 2017, he specifically said he had “no knowledge” of any such conversations.

“Let me state this clearly: I have never met with or had any conversations with any Russians or any foreign officials concerning any type of interference with any campaign or election. Further, I have no knowledge of any such conversations by anyone connected to the Trump campaign,” he said.

“I was your colleague in this body for 20 years, and the suggestion that I participated in any collusion or that I was aware of any collusion with the Russian government to hurt this country, which I have served with honor for over 35 years, or to undermine the integrity of our democratic process, is an appalling and detestable lie.”

Now contrasts Sessions history of doing right with Papadopoulos’ history of lying. In fact, just last year he pleaded guilty to making false statements to the FBI regarding the contacts he had maintained with Russian operatives during the election. Scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 7, the 31-year-old political rookie now faces half a year behind bars for his lies.

It’s because of contrasts like these that very few — or at least very few on the sensible right — believe his current round of claims:

Dovetailing back to the court filing submitted Friday by Papadopoulos’ attorneys, the reason they reportedly filed it was to seek leniency for their client. The guy is basically desperate to avoid being sent to prison. And what do desperate people sometimes do?
