In what may be more a reflection on his endorsement from President Donald Trump than it is about Florida GOP gubernatorial nominee Ron DeSantis, the media wasted little time making his contest against a hard-left African-American opponent about race.
Appearing on Fox News after Tuesday’s big win, DeSantis used the term “monkey” while talking about building on the economic success of the current governor, Rick Scott, who is now running for U.S. Senate.
“We have to work hard to make sure we continue Florida going in a good direction,” DeSantis said. “Let’s build off the success of Governor Scott. The last thing we need to do is to monkey this up by trying to embrace a socialist agenda with huge tax increases and bankrupting the state. That is not going to work, that’s not going to be good for Florida.”
DeSantis’ reference to a socialist agenda was in response to a tweet from Trump calling Democratic nominee Andrew Gillum a “failed socialist mayor” — Gillum was endorsed by democratic socialist Bernie Sanders and is backed by the “future” of the Democratic Party, fellow socialist Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez.
The use of the term “monkey” meaning not to mess up what’s working, of course. But the Trump-backed Republican was immediately attacked by the liberal media for the phrasing, despite his complimentary description of Gillum leading up to the remark.
Here’s a quick sampling of the headlines that flew out..
Marc Caputo, a Florida-based anti-Trump reporter for Politico declared: “The Florida governor’s race is going to be about race.”
The race for Florida governor is going to be about race.

Again, this collective outrage from perpetually offended liberals is as much about continuing a narrative that Trump is a racist as it is about smearing DeSantis. In the eyes of those blinded by their hatred of the president, it’s a reflection on Trump if they brand the candidates he endorses to be racists.
Here’s a sampling of other responses from Twitter, to include other media sources:
The Florida primaries occurred yesterday. It has been less than 24 hours since we learned a white man is running against a black man. This morning, the white man warned Floridians not to "monkey this up" by voting for the black man https://t.co/iATVOTXabc

DeSantis calls Gillum "articulate spokesman for far-left views" and says 'the last thing we need to do is monkey this up by trying to embrace a socialist agenda…..'

Watch Ron DeSantis tell Fox News that Florida shouldn’t “monkey this up” by electing the first African American Governor in @AndrewGillum
This isn’t a Dog Whistle. It’s a Dog Airhorn.

Although Ron Desantis points out how surprisingly “articulate” Gillum is, he doesn’t want to “monkey” things up by allowing him to win.
These dog whistles are just a coincidence, I’m sure
