Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer plans on introducing a resolution to rename the Russell Senate office building after former Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain.
The announcement comes just one day after McCain, who was diagnosed with brain cancer in July 2017, died after his family announced they decided to discontinue his treatment. Schumer said McCain was a man who was “never afraid to speak truth to power in an era where that has become all too rare and that he wanted McCain to be remembered by future generations by introducing a resolution which would rename the Russell building after him.”
The Senate, the United States, and the world are lesser places without John McCain.
Nothing will overcome the loss of Senator McCain, but so that generations remember him I will be introducing a resolution to rename the Russell building after him.

“As you go through life, you meet few truly great people. John McCain was one of them. His dedication to his country and the military were unsurpassed, and maybe most of all, he was a truth teller — never afraid to speak truth to power in an era where that has become all too rare. The Senate, the United States, and the world are lesser places without John McCain,” Schumer said in a statement Saturday night after news of McCain’s death broke.
The resolution picked up immediate bipartisan support from Arizona Republican Sen. Jeff Flake, who said on CBS News’s “Face the Nation” Sunday that he wanted to be “the first Republican co-sponsor” for Schumer’s resolution, saying, “McCain had his office just right near mine in the Russell building. That’s where he was his entire time. I think that that’s a fitting tribute.”
Since the Russell building is under Senate jurisdiction, President Donald Trump would not need to sign off on renaming the facility, according to Roll Call.
