Special Counsel Robert Mueller has asked a judge to sentence former Trump campaign volunteer George Papadopoulos up to six months in prison.

Mueller told the judge that the former Trump campaign staffer, who pleaded guilty last October of lying to investigators about his Russian connections, “caused damage” to the government’s probe, according to a court filing on Friday, The New York Times reported.

Breaking: Special Counsel #RobertMueller recommends judge sentence George Papadopoulos serve six months in prison for lying to investigators in Russia probe – court documents

“The defendant lied in order to conceal his contacts with Russians and Russian intermediaries during the campaign,” the court filing read, noting that this happened early on in the investigation “when key investigative decisions, including who to interview and when, were being made.”
“The defendant’s lies undermined investigators’ ability to challenge the Professor or potentially detain or arrest him while he was still in the United States,” prosecutors wrote. “The defendant’s false statements were intended to harm the investigation, and did so.”

Mueller argued that the prison sentence is “appropriate and warranted.”
“The government does not take a position with respect to a particular sentence to be imposed, but respectfully submits that a sentence of incarceration, within the applicable Guidelines range of 0 to 6 months’ imprisonment, is appropriate and warranted,” he said in the filing.

The special counsel also argued that Papadopoulos “undermined” attempts to interview a key witness.

“The defendant did not provide ‘substantial assistance,'” the filing read.
