U.S. Customs and Border Protection issued a reminder about the “dangers while crossing illegally,” after a man broke his legs jumping a new 30-foot high border wall in California.
The man can be seen on Border Patrol surveillance video lying on the ground after the fall from the barrier Sunday night in downtown Calexico, east of San Diego.
Although Border Patrol didn’t identify the man, he was taken to the hospital in Palm Springs when paramedics determined he had broken his legs and possibly hurt his back, The New York Post reported.
“U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the El Centro Border Patrol Station encountered a severely injured man behind the Gran Plaza Outlet Mall at 9 p.m., Sunday evening,” CPB reported in a press release.
“EMS established that the man has sustained bilateral femur fracture to both legs and a possible back injury. The man was taken by REACH helicopter to a medical center in Palm Springs,” the release stated.
People injured when crossing the border illegally will typically have their medical expenses paid for by the U.S. government. Once they recover, they are reportedly deported.
