Trump’s new ‘zero tolerance’ rules cut welfare-dependent foreigners from taxpayer money spigot

Foreign nationals who need government welfare may find it harder to resettle in the U.S. as the Trump administration is set to roll out a new plan to save American taxpayers money.

The administration’s proposal, spearheaded by White House senior adviser Stephen Miller, would seek to prevent immigrants from coming to the U.S. if they may end up being a drain on taxpayers, Breitbart News reported.

New rules would be added and old laws would be enforced in the multi-pronged plan that would make it harder for legal immigrant residents who have used any forms of welfare in the past –  including Obamacare, food stamps, and public housing – from becoming citizens.

“The administration is committed to enforcing existing immigration law, which is clearly intended to protect the American taxpayer by ensuring that foreign nationals seeking to enter or remain in the U.S are self-sufficient,” a spokeswoman for the Department of Homeland Security told NBC News.

“Any proposed changes would ensure that the government takes the responsibility of being good stewards of taxpayer funds seriously and adjudicates immigration benefit requests in accordance with the law, ” she added.

According to Breitbart:

Officials with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) say the Federal statutes that would give the Trump administration the authority to bar welfare-dependent foreigners from obtaining green cards is a long-standing law, noting that such rules are enforced in many other nations’ immigration systems across the globe.

Australia, for example, has sought to lower the number of welfare-dependent legal immigrants entering the country every year by mandating that migrants meet a certain level of merit-based requirements.

As Breitbart News noted, welfare use by households headed by legal and illegal immigrants in the U.S. is vastly more prevalent than that of households headed by native born Americans.

The proposal, which would not require congressional approval, is already predictably under attack by liberals.

“Any policy forcing millions of families to choose between the denial of status and food or health care would exacerbate serious problems such as hunger, unmet health needs, child poverty and homelessness, with lasting consequences for families’ wellbeing and long-term success and community prosperity,” the National Immigration Law Center said in a statement according to NBC News.

But many others see and appreciate the effort to reign in the number of immigrants seeking permanent status in the U.S.
