Pulitzer Prize winner and nationally syndicated columnist Connie Schultz called President Donald Trump a racist on “AM Joy” Sunday and said he wants to endanger the lives of journalists.
“I’m glad you very quickly acknowledged what’s going on here with those attacks on Lebron James because it is racist,” Schultz said.
Schultz was referring to Trump’s criticism of CNN’s Don Lemon on Twitter Friday, for his interview with NBA star Lebron James. Trump called Lemon the “dumbest man on television” and said he made James look intelligent.
Lebron James was just interviewed by the dumbest man on television, Don Lemon. He made Lebron look smart, which isn’t easy to do. I like Mike!

Schultz also tried to defend Democratic Congresswoman Maxine Waters after Trump said she had a low IQ, but Schultz said Waters’ name wrong and didn’t stop to correct herself.
“He went after a black athlete, again. He went after a black newsman and then he went after Maxine Walters again,” she continued. “And in each case he refers to their intelligence and calls them in different ways, calls them stupid or lower IQ’d. And it’s really important that we just, I think at this point, acknowledge that.”
Schultz said Trump is only trying to appeal to his political base, but refused to criticize his supporters. She instead laid the blame for the country’s division “squarely” on the president.
“He is appealing to a certain percentage of his base. Surely. I’ve decided that I am not going to spend any of my energy mocking Trump supporters, because this responsibility lays squarely with the president,” Schultz added. “He wants them to attack journalists, it’s only a matter of time.”
“He wants to endanger the lives of journalists,” she said. “He is making this so personal and he is not listening to any of his critics, even in the White House, who are telling him ‘you must stop calling journalists the enemy of the people.’”
Schultz is married to Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio, who is running for reelection this November in the upcoming midterms.
