Abortion pill complications skyrocket in Ohio, special report shows

Complications from the abortion pill, RU486, have skyrocketed according to a Friday Operation Rescue report.

Operation Rescue obtained 2014 to 2018 abortion clinic reports listing the number of complications resulting from abortions using medications by clinic and year. Doctors, hospitals and abortion clinics are required by Ohio law to report when any complications occur during or after an abortion.

There were 106 complications due to medication abortions  in 2017, Operation Rescue reported Friday. That number represents a 44 percent increase from 2016 and an 87 percent increase from 2014.

Ohio abortion clinics saw 192 medication abortion complications between 2014 and 2017. The abortion pill has already caused 47 medical complications in 2018.

Northeast Ohio’s Planned Parenthood clinic in Bedford Heights recorded that women undergoing abortions at its facility had a total of 38 abortion complications in 2017, an increase of 60 percent from 2016. That number was the most of any other clinic in the report.

“The increased use of the abortion drug mifepristone has led to a dramatic rise in serious abortion complications,” President of Operation Rescue, Troy Newman, said. “We appreciate Ohio’s reporting requirements because it helps us understand the true dangers of this type of abortion so we can help other women avoid them,” Newman added.

Overall abortions in Ohio have decreased, but the number of mifepristone abortions has increased.

Ohio’s newest abortion clinic, Your Choice Healthcare, had not even been open for two weeks before being sued over violating its contract, The Columbus Dispatch reported Thursday. The clinic opened July 9 on the Northeast Side of Columbus and offers medication abortions but no surgical abortions.

Other abortion clinics in Ohio have faced penalties for violating the law. Toledo Capital Care faces a $40,000 fine following an April 2017 Ohio Department of Health (DOH) inspection revealing that the clinic staffed failed to follow its own emergency procedure, according to The Blade. In addition to the clinic violating emergency procedure, the clinic also failed to provide the paperwork requested by Ohio’s DOH in April 2017.

State inspectors also found 24 violations at the Toledo abortion clinic in the past 10 years, according to The Columbus Dispatch.
