Trump says he’s prepared to be Putin’s ‘worst enemy’ if needed, not like ‘total patsy’ Obama

President Donald Trump is no “patsy” for Russia and warned he’d be Russian President Vladimir Putin‘s “worst enemy” if their relationship sours.

In a sneak preview Thursday of an interview with CNBC, Trump insisted he has been “far tougher on Russia than any president in many, many years” and the toughest president on Russia “maybe ever,” singling out former President Obama’s weak stand against Putin.

“Look at the sanctions I’ve put on. Look at the diplomats I threw out,” the president told MSNBC anchor Joe Kernen in the excerpt.

“Look at everything else I’ve done. Nobody else did what I’ve done,” he continued. “Obama didn’t do it, Obama was a patsy for Russia, Obama was a total patsy.”

Trump’s many decisive actions against Russia in just the first half of his presidency bear out his assertion, though it would be hard to believe if relying on the mainstream media to cover it.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders gave reporters a lesson on just how tough the president has been in Thursday’s press briefing after Washington Post’s Josh Dawsey asked why the president “has not been more critical of Putin.”

“The president has been extremely tough on Russia and to say anything different is just not true,” Sanders said, giving example after example of Trump’s decisions impacting the Kremlin.

In the CNBC interview, Trump reiterated that a good relationship with Russia is to be desired, not avoided.

“Getting along with President Putin, getting along with Russia, is positive, not a negative,” he told Kernen, before warning that he would not be taken advantage of.

“Now, that being said, if that doesn’t work out I’ll be the worst enemy he’s ever had — the worst he’s ever had,” he said, speaking of Putin.

The interview from the White House will air in full Friday at 6 a.m. ET on CNBC’s “Squawk Box.”
