Tucker rejects force-fed Russian hype, reveals country who meddles most in US elections is Mexico

Tucker Carlson thinks the focus on Russia as the culprit behind what ails American politics is simply “demented.”

The Fox News host spoke out about the obsession with the issue of Russian election interference in an appearance on “The Five” via satellite from Finland on Monday.

President Donald Trump immediately came under fire after a joint press conference with Vladimir Putin in Helsinki following a one-on-one meeting earlier in the day on Monday, as many condemned what appeared to be his siding with the Russian president rather than the findings of his own intelligence community.

“I don’t fully understand it. I don’t think Russia is our close friend,” Carlson told host Greg Gutfeld.  I think of course they’re trying to interfere in our affairs. They have for a long time. Many countries do. Some more successfully than Russia, like Mexico — which is routinely interfering in our elections by packing our electorate.”

“I honestly don’t understand why we need to believe that Russia is the primary issue of American political life,” Carlson continued.

“Maybe you disagree with Trump, which is totally fine, but the idea that where you are on Russia is the defining question, that’s kind of demented, actually. It is like number 115 on the list of real concerns,” he added. “At least in my mind. Maybe I’m the demented one.”

Carlson continued to look at the political reaction to Trump’s summit with Putin later in his own show, questioning why “they have forced me to believe that Russia is the greatest threat to my liberty.”

“The reaction in the press was so over the top that it was awe-inspiring. But the reaction of the politicians was more so,” he said on “Tucker Carlson Tonight” as he discussed the issue with political commentator and Fox News contributor, Tammy Bruce.

“In President Trump’s press conference there is something we all didn’t like necessarily. But the reaction, the over-reaction is extraordinary,” Bruce said, defending the president and calling out the negativity that is based solely on politics and not on a real national security concern.

“With all the work that he has done so far, with whatever disagreements you may have with President Trump, he loves the country and he is working for this country. So when you see this kind of  hysterical reaction multiplied, it worries the American people,” Bruce said.  “If their reaction is supposedly about national security and how the nation is viewed, how is the country viewed when you do have elected officials suggesting a coup either via the shadow government or through the military, or denigrating the president so publicly? My point is that this of course is politics and it’s not about the national security.”

Carlson agreed, criticizing the left’s push to control his thinking of Russia as the “greatest threat” there is.

“They seem desperate to force me to believe, especially a Russia agnostic – I have no interest in going to Russia. I’m not interested in Russia,” he said. “But they have tried forced me to believe that Russia is the worst country in the world, the greatest threat to my liberty, the greatest threat to the United States of America. That’s just stupid. Like anyone who pays attention knows that is not true.”

“This is not a defense of Russia,” he added. “Why are they trying to force me to believe that and punish me if I don’t nod in agreement?”

Bruce noted that “they have based everything on Russia controlling Donald Trump. That was their premise for the first six months, to get him to resign or get him impeached.”

While she acknowledged that Russia “did meddle,” she said the liberal narrative is driving everything else.

“The the Democrat Party, the never-Trumpers, the establishment invested in this fantasy of the president, Donald Trump, being controlled by the Russians,” Bruce asserted. “His performance in the last over-500 days has proven his commitment to this nation.”

“It seems disproportionate to be honest,” Carlson agreed.
