Joe Scarborough calls GOP efforts to impeach Rod Rosenstein ‘Putin’s bidding’

MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough said any Republican efforts to impeach Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein are tantamount to doing Russian President Vladimir Putin’s “bidding.”

Scarborough was discussing the Helsinki summit between Putin and President Donald Trump when he said it would be detrimental to go after the man who shed light on Russian interference in American elections.

“I think one of the more surprising things for me was the fact that after Friday’s indictment, an indictment that again, proved beyond a shadow of doubt, beyond any reasonable doubt that Vladimir Putin tried to … subvert American democracy and is still trying to subvert American democracy — that after that indictment came out with stunning detail, you actually had House Republicans say they were going to move to try to impeach Rod Rosenstein,” Scarborough said.

“Say what you will — it makes them look like they’re doing Vladimir Putin’s bidding,” he continued.

Scarborough said the whole situation is “depressing,” but praised GOP Rep. Trey Gowdy of South Carolina for refusing to join the Republican effort to impeach Rosenstein.

“Why in the world would you want to impeach a man that brought forward information on charges that proved to Americans and proved to the world and proved to Vladimir Putin that Russia has tried to interfere in American democracy?” Scarborough said. “That was depressing. I will say there were some leading Republicans including Trey Gowdy, who can’t seem to pick a side, but at least he’s on the side of protecting American democracy this weekend.”

GOP Reps. Jim Jordan of Ohio and Mark Meadows of North Carolina have repeatedly brought up the possibility of impeaching Rosenstein and the Freedom Caucus drafted articles of impeachment as what they referred to as a “last resort” in April, according to Fox News.

Gowdy, however, threw water on the fire and went on record over the weekend to say it’s unlikely to happen.

“I’m not convinced there is a movement [to impeach Rosenstein], Gowdy said on CBS’s “Face The Nation” Sunday. He also said if Trump wants Rosenstein gone, he could simply fire him in a tweet, as he serves at the pleasure of the president.

“There were some Republicans that did not kowtow to Vladimir Putin and Russia this weekend. And I suppose we can take that as a win,” Scarborough concluded.
