Rep. Trey Gowdy took care to quell reports that fellow Republicans will put forth an effort this week to impeach Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, suggesting if President Donald Trump wants him gone, he can accomplish that with one tweet.
Appearing Sunday on CBS News’ “Face the Nation,” the South Carolina Republican was asked by moderator Margaret Brennan if he was going to sign on to this effort.
“No. For what?” Gowdy replied with a chuckle. “Impeach him for what?”
“Inappropriate?” Brennan followed up.
“I’ve had my differences with Rod Rosenstein. I talk to him quite often privately, which again is a lot more constructive than the public hearings we have,” Gowdy said. “He’s a Trump appointee. So is [Attorney General] Jeff Sessions. So is [FBI Director] Chris Wray.
“If President Trump is dissatisfied with Rod Rosenstein, he can fire him with a tweet.”
He cast doubt on the veracity of the report of an impeachment effort of the man who oversees special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russian collusion probe.
“I’m not convinced there is a movement,” Gowdy said. “I read about it in Politico and sometimes their sources are better than mine. But I’m not part of that.”
Politico reported last week Reps. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., and Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, were working with other conservative lawmakers on “putting the finishing touches on an impeachment filing” against Rosenstein.

Meadows is chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, which was founded by Jordan.
Impeachment came up earlier in the conversation, as well — in relation to Trump.
Gowdy was asked about the possibility that the president is being “corrosive to our democracy” by calling out the US intelligence apparatus over the actions of a small group of people.
“Put yourself in President Trump’s shoes for just a second,” Gowdy said. “Jim Comey thought that impeachment was too good for you. John Brennan says you should be in the dustbin of history. Those are not insignificant people, one headed the FBI the other headed the CIA when you were under investigation. The lead FBI agent said that you would be destabilizing for the country and promise to stop your candidacy.”
He then told the moderator she would be concerned if she was “being investigated by people who had that level of bias and animus against you.”
