Please keep talking, Ocasio-Cortez: ‘Our immigration system is built on a premise of exclusion’

Democratic congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez believes the country needs to “re-examine” the values it has used to legislate immigration.

The U.S. House of Representatives nominee for New York’s 14th congressional district explained to MSNBC’s Joy Reid what she thinks should replace the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement if it is abolished as some, including herself, have been clamoring for.

“A lot of what we need to talk about, is what values our immigration system has been legislated on,” the Democratic Socialist superstar told Reid on Saturday’s “AM Joy” on MSNBC.

Ocasio-Cortez, who beat 10-term incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley last month, has repeatedly called for the abolition of ICE, falsely stating last week that the U.S. did not add criminal penalties to the immigration law until about 1999, when in fact that was  1929.

“The original roots of the U.S. immigration system, the first immigration law was the Chinese Exclusion Act and our immigration system is built on a premise of exclusion,” Ocasio-Cortez told Reid.

“It’s built on a premise of choosing who we want out instead of who we want in,” she said.

“And I think that really we need to re-examine the values of inclusion and values of what this country is about when we talk about our immigration policy,” she added.

While the left may blindly applaud Ocasio-Cortez and her remarks, many called her out for missing the obvious.
