Democratic Sen. Jon Tester of Montana is running a full-page advertisement in a dozen Montana-based newspapers welcoming the president to his home state and thanking him for signing 16 Democrat-backed bills into law.
“Welcome to Montana & Thank You President Trump for supporting Jon’s legislation to help veterans and first responders, hold the VA accountable, and get rid of waste, fraud and abuse in the federal government,” the ad reads.

The president is slated to attend a rally Thursday evening in Great Falls, Montana. The administration is targeting the state as a possible win in November, hoping to add to Republicans’ slim 51-seat majority in the upper chamber. Tester is one of 10 Senate Democrats running for reelection in a state that Trump carried in 2016.
Tester’s ad was likely an attempt to undercut the president’s visit Thursday. The president, notably, uses these campaign rallies as an opportunity to speak directly to voters and take shots at sitting Democrats, like he did on June 27 at a rally in North Dakota, attacking the state’s Democratic Sen. Heidi Heitkamp.
Tester used the advertisement to thank the president for signing 16 bills that Senate Democrats either sponsored or co-sponsored into law.
The president reportedly plans to use the Thursday evening rally to tell voters about how his economic policies are helping the nation and his administration’s focus on national security. The president could also bring up the recent immigration battles in the House.
