Jim Acosta seemed to become a lightning rod for CNN mockery at a South Carolina rally where President Trump was scheduled to speak.
Hours before Trump arrived in West Columbia to stump for Gov. Henry McMaster in the state’s gubernatorial primary Monday night, Acosta was reporting in front of the crowd gathered in the arena.
But the Trump supporters were not keen on welcoming the network cameras or its chief White House correspondent.
“Of course, President Trump will be here later on tonight campaigning for the man who wants to be the governor of South Carolina for another four years, that is Henry McMaster,” Acosta told CNN anchor Wolf Bltizer back in the studio as the crowd behind him began chanting.
“As you can hear behind me, Wolf, the crowd is very fired up,” Acosta continued as a man held up a “CNN Sucks” sign in clear view of the camera. The audience began chanting “CNN Sucks!” and “Four more years” as Acosta was talking.
Chants of “Go home, Jim!” also could be heard at Trump’s rally at Airport High School.

“We have about a couple of thousand people in this room so far. They are letting the press corps here know exactly how they feel about what we’re doing here,” Acosta said, as the report turned back to Blitzer in the studio.

One attendee confronted Acosta personally and accused him of not respecting the country.
“I do respect the United States, yes I do,” Acosta responded to the woman in videos posted by an Associated Press reporter and identified as Maria Rojas.
One last clip of the exchange as she accuses @Acosta of not respecting the United States. When he replies that he does, she says, “No! You do not respect it!” #SCGov pic.twitter.com/lZhMDKwAED

This followed video of her berating Acosta as the crowd cheered her on.
Here’s some video of a woman berating @Acosta. This went on for several minutes as many in the crowd cheered her on. As someone who’s covered my share of Trump rallies, it feels like 2016 all over again. pic.twitter.com/j0SF2nFDvG

Acosta later reported that not everyone at the rally treated him and his team with the “civility” he expected, an ironic statement coming from the reporter who has frequently played the victim and rudely shouted questions at the president, his press secretary and other dignitaries.
“While we have had some people come up to us and be very nice this evening, I did have an elderly woman come up to me … and said that we at CNN should get the ‘f’ out of this auditorium,” Acosta said.
CNN: @Acosta: “While we have had people come up to us and be nice. I had an elderly woman just a short while’s come up to me—she came up to me & said that we at CNN should get the f*** out of this auditorium… She turned to the crowd & whipped them up into a frenzy.” pic.twitter.com/KRDP4tpnFJ

“She then turned to the crowd and whipped them up into a frenzy,” he added. “We are here to do our jobs and report the news and report on this rally and we’re not going anywhere.”

Following the heated encounter with the woman, however, Acosta was reportedly posing for pictures with rally attendees and signing “MAGA hats and McMaster signs” according to BuzzFeed News political reporter, Henry Gomez and others who watched the ups and downs at the rally.
Jim Acosta is now posing for selfies and autographing MAGA hats and McMaster signs. So there’s that.

The surreal pregame at tonight’s Trump rally for Henry McMaster in SC: Boos of @Acosta turn to requests for selfies and autographs. Civility! https://t.co/qNvTkRj2DT

Sitting next to @Acosta is the … ahem … “best” seat in the house. Frequent chanting of “@CNN sucks,” “Go home, Jim,” after which many have then asked for selfies and autographs. ?♀️? #SCGov pic.twitter.com/lo76znlmvi

Man who just repeatedly shouted “Go home Jim!” and “CNN sucks!”came over, had a pleasant debate with @Acosta and asked him for a shoutout at the next press briefing. “Didn’t you just shout for me to go home? What do you really want?” @Acosta says. “A little of both!” he says. pic.twitter.com/6FMHF9s7Mb

A moment of civility: As POTUS is delayed due to weather, @CNN’ s @Acosta gave up his chair to an elderly Trump supporter. She was so appreciative that she wanted her photo taken with him. Her son said to Jim, “You’re a good man. Your mama raised you right.” #SCGov pic.twitter.com/0vXaCgjugE

Fact check: My mom did raise me right. Happy to lend a hand. https://t.co/OiOlLtkrSN
