President Donald Trump reportedly had a “Starburst outburst” at the Group of Seven summit earlier this month, throwing Starburst candies at German Chancellor Angela Merkel, according to Eurasia Group President Ian Bremmer.
Appearing on “CBS This Morning” on Wednesday, Bremmer suggested the incident was a result of Trump’s “emotional state” after being pressed to sign a communiqué committing to a “rules-based international order.”
He referenced the scene captured in a photo that went viral that depicts President Trump sitting with his arms crossed, as Merkel and other leaders stood across from him.

“The advisers had been working on it until 3:00 that morning, straight through the night, including [Trump economic adviser Larry] Kudlow from the United States, and Trump was sitting there with his arms crossed, clearly not liking the fact that he felt like they were ganging up on him,” Bremmer alleged.
“He eventually agreed. He said, okay, he’ll sign it,” he added. “At that point, he stood up, he put his hand in his pocket, his suit jacket pocket, and he took two Starburst candies out, threw them on the table, and said to Merkel, ‘Here, Angela. Don’t say I never give you anything.’”
“So President Trump had a Starburst outburst?” quipped co-anchor Norah O’Donnell O’Donnell quipped, to laughter from the control room.
“His personal relationship with Merkel is deeply broken,” Bremmer responded. “The leaders obviously do not respect each other.”
Trump described a very different scene at a press conference following his historic meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Singapore, saying he had already agreed to sign the document — he later backed out on — and they were waiting for a new draft with changes he had asked for.

“The picture with Angela Merkel, who I get along with very well, where I’m sitting there like this [he crosses his arms],” he explained, “that picture was we’re waiting for the document because I wanted to see the final document as changed by the changes that I requested.”
“That was a very friendly – I know it didn’t look friendly, and I know it was reported as sort of like nasty both ways, I was angry at her or she… – actually, we were just talking, the whole group, about something unrelated to everything, very friendly.”
