Trump-backed Republican gubernatorial candidate wins in California. Let that sink in.

Trump-backed Republican John Cox will face Democrat Gavin Newsom in the California gubernatorial election in November. It was a surprising outcome for the primary race that saw Democratic frontrunner Antonio Villaraigosa concede amid growing voter discontentment over California’s increasingly radical-left policies.

Villaraigosa, the former mayor of Los Angeles, was widely considered a shoe-in to run against California’s current lieutenant governor Newsom for the top spot in the liberal state. California’s “jungle primary” system allows the top two finishers to advance to the general election regardless of party affiliation.

John Cox was buoyed at the polls by a last-minute endorsement from President Trump, who urged conservatives to rally around the businessman and attorney, saying he could help “solve its high crime, high tax, problems.”

Cox said his unexpected primary win against Democratic frontrunner Antonio Villaraigosa suggested the tide is slowly turning in California.

“This is only the first step to turning around this state and taking back California for all Californians,” Cox told supporters, as reported by Fox News.

While the likelihood that Cox will win the gubernatorial race is miniscule given how ultra-liberal the state has become, his upset primary victory spotlights that Democrats should not take anything for granted.

As BizPac Review previously reported, a growing chorus of California counties are challenging the state’s sanctuary law, joining 12 other cities that don’t want the state to become a sanctuary for illegal aliens.

In other California primary news, Senator Dianne Feinstein easily won her race. Feinstein has been a senator for 26 years. It is a given that she will retain her senate seat against any opponent from her district.

Senator Feinstein, who turns 85 later this month, raised eyebrows in January 2018, when she revealed that she leaked Senate testimony to the anti-Trump media because she had “slow mental facilities.”

Meanwhile, Feinstein’s octogenarian colleague, Maxine Waters, made a fool of herself when only 11 Millennials showed up at a campaign rally she held targeting…Millennials.

This lackluster turnout isn’t a surprise, since other voters in Congresswoman Waters’ district have expressed outrage at her poor track record of helping her community.

In June 2017, a black constituent slammed Maxine Waters as a “black racist” who has “destroyed the black community.”

The protester said, “She lied to the black community, saying she was going to bring us jobs. She gave those jobs to illegal criminals! We want her out! She’s been in office for too long! She’s already showing signs of dementia!”
