The Secret Service arrested a White House contractor wanted on attempted murder charges as he arrived to work.
A contractor for the White House National Security Council was taken into custody at a Secret Service checkpoint when he showed up for work on Tuesday, ABC News reported.
Martese Edwards had an outstanding warrant on an attempted first-degree murder charge from May 17, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s department of Prince George’s Country, Maryland, told CBS News.
The Secret Service issued the following statement to CBS News:
“On June 4, 2018, the U.S. Secret Service was notified by the Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) that Martese Edwards was the subject of a warrant issued out of Prince Georges County, MD. On June 5, 2018, Edwards was promptly arrested by Secret Service Uniformed Division Officers at a checkpoint outside of the White House complex when he was reporting to work as a contractor. Edwards was transported to MPD Second District for processing.”
The attempted murder charges stem from a domestic dispute on May 3 involving Edwards, his ex-girlfriend and her current boyfriend who was shot, CBS News reported. The woman apparently did not report the incident until May 17 and a warrant was issued the next day.

The Secret Service reportedly does not check pass holders against a criminal database each time someone goes through the checkpoint, according to ABC News, but does “routinely” do so. It seems Edwards was not checked against the system for about three weeks since the warrant was issued.
Edwards was turned over to Washington, D.C. police for processing and charged with being a fugitive from justice. He could later be extradited to Maryland. It was not clear what Edwards’ job at the White House was or how often he came onto the grounds since the issuing of the warrant.
