White House counselor Kellyanne Conway cornered CNN’s Brian Stelter about who he voted for in the 2016 election during a fiery exchange on the air.
“If you want to talk about the 2016 election, let’s talk about it,” Conway responded as Stelter pressed her on President Trump’s insistence that there was no collusion between his campaign and Russia.
“I think everything should come out,” she said on “Reliable Sources” on Sunday, asking the CNN host for evidence that Russian meddling influenced the election. Stelter brought up the Democratic National Committee server being hacked and the content of emails then shared by WikiLeaks.
“Whoa, whoa, Brian, you’re trying to break news here and it’s not working. I’m sorry, did you just say something that a lot of people on your side of the aisle are not willing to say?” Conway asked.
“I’m not on a side of an aisle. That’s an offensive remark,” Stelter replied.
“Well, tell America. Did you vote for Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump? How did your wife vote? Tell America,” Conway shot back, with an apparent jab at CNN for her previous interview with Dana Bash in which she was asked about her husband’s negative tweets on Trump.
“I did not vote for president,” Stelter responded to Conway’s question. “I left that spot blank on the ballot that day. But it’s not appropriate for you to go around asking people who they voted for.”
“You probably didn’t think she needed your help,” Conway quipped.
She later called Stelter and his network out for continuing to bash the president instead of focusing on stories the American people are more interested in.
“Look, if you think your job is to get the president and not get a story, you ought to just own it, just say it, because I know your viewers expect that now,” she said. “Look at their comments all the time. Don’t have Trump people on. They expect you to be reflexively, invectively anti-Trump. It’s problematic.”
“I’m glad you’re here. The goal is not to get the president,” Stelter claimed without a trace of self-awareness. “The goal is to get the truth. There’s a lot of people lying and trying to obscure the truth.”
