Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont announced he is running for a third term in the Senate Monday morning.
“The 2018 midterm elections will be a pivotal moment in our country’s history and we must fight for an agenda that works for working people,” Sanders said in a campaign statement Monday.
“I look forward to continuing to help lead the effort for a national minimum wage of $15 an hour and pay equity for women; a Medicare for all single payer program; free tuition at public colleges and universities and the reduction of student debt; creating millions of good paying jobs by rebuilding our crumbling infrastructure; addressing systemic racism; combatting climate change; demanding that the wealthy and large corporations start paying their fair share of taxes; common sense gun safety legislation; protecting a woman’s right to choose; criminal justice reform, immigration reform, as well as many other important issues,” Sanders said in a campaign statement.
Sanders doesn’t face a Republican challenger. RealClearPolitics has his seat as safely Independent and his national notoriety after challenging former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in the 2016 president election for the Democratic nomination will undoubtedly be a boon for Sanders.
The Vermont senator hasn’t yet said whether or not he will make a bid for the Democratic nomination in 2020, but many are already calling for him to try again.
