Tucker puts Calif. Republican in the hot seat: Why would you give a path to citizenship for illegals?

Rep. Jeff Denham, R-Calif, was grilled by Fox News Channel’s Tucker Carlson on the topic of illegal immigration, with the lawmakers’ priorities taking center court after he spoke of the “need” to address so-called Dreamers.

Denham offered what has become standard lip service from the GOP on how we “have to fix our immigration process” before instituting a program like E-Verify to take away the incentive to come to the US illegally.

“The president has talked about dealing with border security, dealing with our dreamers right now because they are in a different situation after following their government and signing up for DACA,” he said. “We need to resolve that issue.”

And that’s where the lawmaker went afoul.

“Following our government?” Carlson interjected. “We encourage them to come here illegally with their parents?

Denham explained that “these kid” — see illegal immigrants — came forward at the behest of former President Barack Obama, who sign the executive order creating the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

Sounding more like a Democrat, Denham explained these people have been in the US for decades, that they “have graduated from our high schools… have grown up in this country [and] know of no other country or no other home.”

Carlson expressed surprise over this being such a priority for an elected official in California, given more pressing problems in the state.

“I’m just saying in a world where there are a lot of priorities, why is this your number one priority?” he asked. “In your state you got more than 100,000 people living on the sidewalk, those are American citizens.

“Why don’t you deal with a problem like that first before you start passing out citizenship to people here illegally? I don’t understand.”

Pointing to the president again, Denham said Trump asked for a solution on DACA and for border security, which prompted Carlson to ask how the first is possible when the second has not been achieved.

“Why would we give citizenship to anybody here illegally,” he asked, “give voting rights to anyone whose family came here illegally before not a single new person crossing the border illegally?

The congressman explained illegal immigrants are being giving anything, that it would be a 12 year earned process to citizenship, but Carlson continued to question why this would be a top priority in a state with more pressing problems.
