Dr. Robert Jeffress, a noted evangelical minister set to deliver the opening prayer at the new U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem, found himself under fire from 2012 Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.
Romney, a Mormon running for Senate in Utah, took to social media to call Jeffress a “religious bigot,” citing previous remarks made by the spiritual adviser to President Donald Trump.
“Robert Jeffress says ‘you can’t be saved by being a Jew,’ and ‘Mormonism is a heresy from the pit of hell.’ He’s said the same about Islam,” Romney tweeted. “Such a religious bigot should not be giving the prayer that opens the United States Embassy in Jerusalem.”

Not deterred, an unimpressed Jeffress responded to essentially say there’s nothing to see here.
“Historic Christianity has taught for 2,000 years that salvation is through faith in Christ alone,” he tweeted. “The fact that I, along with tens of millions of evangelical Christians around the world, continue to espouse that belief, is neither bigoted nor newsworthy.”

Dr. Emir Caner, president of Truett-McConnell University, a private Christian school, weighed in to say if Jeffress is a bigot, then so too is Jesus Christ.
“After all, if Jeffress is a bigot for declaring that there is only one way to heaven, so too was Jesus a bigot by declaring, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me,” Caner said, according to Fox News.
For what it’s worth, Jeffress, who has called the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints a “cult,” endorsed Romney for president in 2012.
With Trump making good on a campaign promise to move the US Embassy to Jerusalem, the White House delegation to Monday’s historic opening include senior advisers Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump, the president’s daughter, and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.
