Convicted coal-mining executive Don Blankenship, who lost the GOP primary race in West Virginia, is planning to undermine fellow Republican Patrick Morrisey in his Senate bid, even if it means handing the seat over to a Democrat.
“Don Blankenship will not be supporting Patrick Morrisey for U.S. Senate,” his campaign manager Greg Thomas told Talkline. “The one thing he’s going to make sure doesn’t happen is that Patrick Morrisey becomes a U.S. Senator…He isn’t going to sit back and let a corrupt carpetbagger hijack our party.”

It’s unclear what Blankenship plans to do to attack Patrick Morrisey, the current attorney general of West Virginia, but according to Thomas, “we’ve only just begun.”
President Trump endorsed Morrisey, but gave a resounding “No way!” to Blankenship’s candidacy amid controversy over his inflammatory campaign ad, which many viewed as tasteless and overtly racist.

In the ad, Blankenship attacked Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell and his wife, U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, who is Chinese-American.
“Swamp captain Mitch McConnell has created millions of jobs for China people,” Blankenship said in the ad. “While doing so, Mitch has gotten rich. In fact, his China family has given him tens of millions of dollars.”

After he lost the GOP primary race to Morrisey, Blankenship penned an open letter to President Trump, slamming him for “interfering” in the West Virginia election. As the leader of the Republican party, President Trump has a duty to support GOP candidates whom he believes will promote his agenda. And that’s exactly what he did when he endorsed Morrisey.
“You, yourself, also spread fake news against me,” Blankenship wrote in an open letter to Trump. “Your interference in the West Virginia election displayed a lack of understanding of the likely outcome of the upcoming general election.”
In 2016, Blankenship was sentenced to a year in jail after being convicted of safety violations at his coal-mining company which caused the deaths of 29 men in a 2010 mining explosion.
