Dramatic video surveillance footage captured the moment a quick thinking 11-year-old girl jumped out of a moving car to escape a carjacker.
Kayla Beasanski was in the backseat of her father’s car at a Chicago-area gas station where he was pumping gas when the incident took place, according to WGN-TV.
Video released Tuesday by the Aurora Police Department showed the heart-pounding scene as a man jumped out of a Dodger Charger and into the Jeep Cherokee belonging to Mark Beasanski. His 11-year-old daughter jumped out of the backseat and rolled on to the pavement in the parking lot as the driver sped away.
The video also showed Beasanski atop the hood of another car that was allegedly an accomplice as both suspects drove away.
The video then showed the father come back to his daughter as the two hugged.
“Miraculously neither the girl nor her father were hurt,” police said.
Young Kayla admitted that she was a “little afraid” but knew she would be okay if she jumped out.
“At least I’m not in the car,” she told WBBM-TV, adding that all she really remembers is her father yelling at Pulley that his daughter was in the car while pounding on the window.
“She was screaming inside the car and he didn’t even bother to look back at her,” Beasanski said, adding that he “couldn’t be more proud” of his daughter.
The stolen vehicle was spotted on the highway about an hour later by an Illinois State Police trooper. After a brief chase, 20-year-old Tyrelle L. Pulley of Chicago crashed and totaled the car, according to WBBM.
Though his accomplice is still being sought, Pulley was arrested and is facing charges of aggravated vehicle hijacking, aggravated unlawful possession of a stolen motor vehicle and fleeing and eluding police.
“This is really sad to say about society today although he turned the vehicle off, you have to take the opportunity away from a brazen criminal to do something like this. It’s an opportunity for thieves,” Aurora Police Spokesperson Dan Ferrelli told WGN.
