Biased NY Times owes Mike Pompeo a huge apology

The New York Times was forced to eat crow after slamming Mike Pompeo for being absent during a critical time for the Trump administration.

The headline of the Times piece bashing the secretary of state which was published Tuesday read, “At a Key Moment, Trump’s Top Diplomat Is Again Thousands of Miles Away.”

Pompeo was, indeed, thousands of miles away in Pyongyang as President Trump made his long-anticipated statement on the Iran nuclear deal, announcing the U.S. would be withdrawing from the Obama-era pact. But Pompeo wasn’t on just any trip, as he was actually rescuing three Americans being held captive in North Korea.

“[W]hen Mr. Trump made what could be the most significant diplomatic announcement of his presidency — that he would exit the Iran nuclear agreement — his chief diplomat was again thousands of miles away, this time on an unannounced visit to Pyongyang, the North’s capital, to lay further groundwork for a summit meeting between Mr. Kim and Mr. Trump,” the Times article by Gardiner Harris said.

“Senior State Department officials were momentarily speechless on Tuesday when asked why Mr. Pompeo did not delay his trip by a day to be in Washington during Mr. Trump’s Iran deal announcement,” the article stated.

But the attempt to attack the Trump administration backfired when the president tweeted Wednesday morning.

However, it was not clear why the publication went with its headline and chose to focus on the secretary of state’s absence, which was attributed to laying “further groundwork for a summit meeting” between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. Buried later in the piece was the note that “according to a senior aide to South Korea’s president, Moon Jae-in, Mr. Pompeo was expected to leave Pyongyang with three Americans now imprisoned in North Korea and return to the United States with them.”

The article cited an official saying Pompeo was reachable by phone but then mocked the “secretary’s aging plane” which “has such poor equipment that calls are often dropped midsentence.”

“Meanwhile, Mr. Pompeo told reporters on his plane that his agenda in North Korea was to reach an agreement on the date, time and specific location for the summit meeting between Mr. Kim and Mr. Trump,” Harris wrote.

While Pompeo’s absence may have “left perplexed European diplomats privately complaining that they were having trouble getting answers from Washington,” according to Harris, it’s a sure bet that the Americans he rescued –  Tony Kim, Kim Hak Song and Kim Dong Chul – are glad they were the priority for the secretary of state.

The planned goal of setting a date and place for the anticipated meeting between the president and Kim was also met, according to Trump who said he plans to meet Pompeo and his “guests” when they land.
