George Washington Law School professor Jonathan Turley said if anyone in the Trump team tried to influence witnesses in the Stormy Daniels case, it could result in an obstruction charge against the president.
“The problem is not the campaign finance charge itself,” Turley said on “Morning Joe” Monday. “The problem is really the investigation itself.”
“The investigation has been in the field. They have a search warrant referring to the payments of stormy Daniels. Any effort to influence witnesses, withhold evidence, produce false narratives could be the obstruction case that has so far evaded Robert Mueller,” he added.
Turley said Trump’s firing of former FBI Director James Comey was within his constitutional authority but thinks any effort to interfere with witnesses would bolster Robert Mueller’s case.
“With regard to the Comey matter, it’s more complex because the president is using his inherent constitutional powers. But with Stormy Daniels, all that falls away,” Turley said.
“If you try to influence witnesses, obstruct efforts with regard to that investigation, it’s a much clearer shot for the southern district to allege something like obstruction.”
