Justice Sotomayor collapsed this week — injuries are worse than we thought

The injuries Justice Sonia Sotomayor suffered during an early morning fall in her Washington, D.C., home Monday are more serious than initially thought.

The justice fractured her left shoulder, The Supreme Court announced Tuesday but indicated the injury was not severe. The break is more serious than the earlier diagnosis reflects, a second statement released Thursday revealed.

“The tests revealed that the fracture of her proximal humerus (the ball of the shoulder joint) is more severe than initially believed,” Supreme Court spokeswoman Kathleen Arberg said. “Further evaluation will determine treatment of the injury.”

The justice is expected to limit her travel for the foreseeable future. Sotomayor is currently scheduled to address the Brooklyn Bar Association and the graduating class of UC Davis School of Law in the coming weeks. She will also wear a sling and attend physical therapy, according to the Tuesday statement.

She is not expected to miss arguments. The high court will hear a challenge to the latest round of President Donald Trump’s travel sanctions on April 25.

Monday’s incident is the second time this year the court made a public announcement respecting Sotomayor’s health. Emergency medical personnel treatedher in January for symptoms relating to low blood sugar. The justice is a Type 1 diabetic.
