A month after shooting, Broward deputy is suspended for sleeping on duty at Parkland HS and that’s not all

It seems troubling news continues to unfold in Parkland, Florida one month after the deadly mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Three students from the school were arrested on Tuesday in separate incidents and even a sheriff’s deputy was suspended.

Reports from the Broward Sheriff’s Office revealed that two of the high school’s students were arrested for bringing knives to school. A third student was arrested after allegedly making a threat on social media, according to WSVN.

According to deputies, 18 year-old Jordan Salter was arrested at the school after she allegedly showed a 2-inch knife in the school cafeteria during a confrontation with a male student on Tuesday morning.

About a half hour after the incident, deputies were called back to the school around 10 a.m. after a 10th-grader made threatening posts against a classmate on social media, according to officials.

The Sun Sentinal reported:

A sophomore was hospitalized for a mental-health evaluation after deputies learned he had posted photos of himself on Snapchat with a gun in his waistband along with images of bullets, according to the sheriff’s office. Both photos contained threatening messages, with one directed to somebody named ‘Josh,’ the sheriff’s office said.

The student, who was hospitalized for a mental-health evaluation, told a detective that the firearm in the photo was a BB gun and the bullets belonged to his father, according to a sheriff’s office report.

In yet another incident on Tuesday afternoon, 16 year-old Gavin Stricker was taken into custody after classes ended. He had allegedly been displaying a knife on the bus on Monday, a student told teachers. Sheriff’s deputies reportedly said, “a 9-inch knife was found in his backpack,” according to WSVN.

The student’s sister was in one of the classrooms that got shot last month, according to Stricker’s mother, who said officials told her that her son admitted to carrying the knife “for protection.”

“I think he was as scared as the rest of us were,” Amanda Stricker said, according to the Sun Sentinel. “We thought he was doing OK, and I think he wasn’t doing as well as we thought he was.”

Stoneman Douglas Principal Ty Thompson, in a recorded message a few hours later, said all three students involved in the separate incidents on Tuesday “will receive the appropriate consequences through the juvenile justice system and the district’s code of student conduct.”

But the unsettling reports did not involve only students at the high school where 19-year-old gunman Nikolas Cruz opened fire last month killing 17 people.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office suspended one of its own after he was allegedly seen asleep in his patrol car.

A student notified a sergeant that Deputy Moises Carotti appeared to be asleep in his car just after 5 p.m. on Monday, The Sun Sentinel reported. The sergeant knocked on the window of Carotti’s patrol car to wake him up. The deputy, who was suspended with pay, was supposed to be monitoring the perimeter of the building where last month’s shooting took place.

“That a deputy was sleeping is incredibly disappointing,” Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said. “As you know, I can’t comment on an ongoing internal affairs investigation, but once the findings are in I will make the appropriate decisions regarding the way we are going to handle it and the level of discipline.”

“Of all the schools in America, you would think this would be the safest one right now. This is so outrageous, it’s almost impossible to believe,” Florida Sen. Marco Rubio said in a statement, according to WSVN.

The disturbing incidents at the school came just one day after the arrest of Zachary Cruz, the 18-year-old brother of the Stoneman Douglas killer, for trespassing on school grounds.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott offered the school the temporary assistance of the Florida Highway Patrol.

“Today, I am requesting that immediate action be taken to require an armed law enforcement officer to secure every point of entry at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School while students are on campus. To help with this goal, the state is willing to provide assistance from the Florida Highway Patrol, until a more permanent safety plan can be put into place, Scott said in a statement, according to the Sun Sentinel.
