Lawsuits were expected upon Florida Gov. Rick Scott’s signing into law Friday a gun control bill that raises the age to buy a gun, and the National Rifle Association took no time leading the parade.
The organization representing millions of responsible gun owners was adamant the new law that comes after last month’s shooting at a Florida high school that claimed the lives of 17 people violates the Second Amendment.
Taking to Twitter soon after the Republican governor signed the legislation, the NRA announced its lawsuit.
“The NRA filed a lawsuit challenging Florida’s newly-enacted ban on the purchase of firearms by adults between the ages of 18-21. It is an affront to #2A, as it totally eviscerates the #2A rights of law-abiding adults to keep and bear arms,” tweeted the organization, including the hashtag #DefendTheSecond.

The bill passed by the Republican-led Florida legislature “raises the minimum age to buy rifles from 18 to 21, extends a three-day waiting period for handgun purchases to include long guns and bans bump stocks, attachments that enable semiautomatic rifles to approximate the firing speed of fully automatic ones,” Fox News reported.
The bill also included a provision that enables teachers and other school employees to carry handguns, after undergoing extensive training.
But Chris Cox, the executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action, said the legislation “punishes law-abiding gun owners for the criminal acts of a deranged individual,” according to Fox News.
Women are also impacted by the law.
The release added: “The ban is particularly offensive with respect to young women, as women between the ages of 18 and 21 are much less likely to engage in violent crime than older members of the general population who are unaffected by the ban.”
